Seventeen years ago today, our nation suffered the deadliest terrorist attack in our history, and for many of us the memories and the shock of that day are still fresh and painful.

At TSA, the anniversary of 9/11 is particularly important because 9/11 is the reason TSA exists. It reminds us that the country relies on us and our partners for protection.

Even more importantly, September 11 is the day on which we come together and pause to remember the lives we lost and honor the sacrifices made by our brave first responders.

As we commemorate 9/11, we remain committed to leading security innovation and advancing global transportation security standards. That’s why we are investing heavily in new security technology and canine resources. Each and every member of TSA contributes to our security mission and on this day, I salute you for your dedicated service to our country.

We must never, ever forget the lessons of 9/11 nor allow ourselves to grow complacent. For 17 years we have lived by the creed Not on My Watch! It is the last line of the recommitment pledge we read at every 9/11 anniversary ceremony.

But this year we will be adopting a new creed – one that I hope will inspire an even stronger relationship between TSA and those we serve – Not on Our Watch!
